Time travel to the past: as a 12th-year student, you meet a talent scout; how would he have described yourself, which talents would he have identified in you?
In year 12, I was a quiet and introvert student. I knew that, like so many others, I wanted to do something in the media, and my parents encouraged me to enrol in a degree course. But I wanted to play it safe and to complete vocational training as a management assistant in publishing first. I only sent out one application and was fortunately accepted on the spot.
Back then, our school didn’t offer much help to school-leavers who tried to figure out which degree course or profession to choose. Seeing as before me nobody in my family had studied at university, I would have liked to talk to a talent scout about how a degree course works and if I would be suited for one at all.

Today, you are a talent scout yourself; why are you the right person for the job, what are your strengths?
Because I completed vocational training before enrolling at university, I am familiar with both options and can share my experiences with the school-leavers. In addition, I have been coordinating the activities of RUB Guides for several years and am therefore in touch with students from all disciplines and know the academic advisors at the individual departments. If the individual disciplines have something like a specific spirit, I am able to assess it and tell the school-leavers about it.
As a long-standing member of the Student Advice Centre, I consider myself a pilot of sorts to the other scouts. I hope to introduce them in all networks and structures at our university and at our partner organisations, in order to provide best possible guidance to the school-leavers.

Looking into the future, five years from now: what have you learned? At what kind of experiences do you look back?
I hope that, in the course of those five years, all talent scouts will have encouraged many school-leavers to make their own way and to believe in themselves. By that time, the scouts will hopefully be firmly established in schools and universities and become indispensable to the guidance system.
