FAQ

Which types of school can participate in the project?
The project addresses six-form students in schools of the Gymnasium, Gesamtschule and Berufskolleg type.

Students of which years can take part?
Students from year 10 and older can participate in the talent scouting project. It is of course possible to join the project in a later school year, if they’re interested.

What kind of duties do we have as a school/as teachers?
If you would like to collaborate with us, the school must appoint one teacher as the contact person in charge of the project at the school – for his or her colleagues as well as for students and talent scouts. The school organises the dates and the room for the guidance interviews. Moreover, the talent scouts should be offered the opportunity to introduce themselves to the teaching staff and the parents.

How can you support the scouts as a teacher?
You are the one who knows your students, their abilities and their family backgrounds best. Therefore, we welcome your assistance, for example if you explain talent scouting to gifted students and encourage them to make an appointment for an interview with the talent scout at their school. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

What procedure do we have to follow if we would like to have talent scouts at our school?
If your school belongs to Bochum or Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis, you have to get in touch with Hochschule Bochum (Bochum University of Applied Sciences) or Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Just send an email to talentscouting@rub.de, in order to discuss the first steps.

What do we mean by „young talent“?
Grades are important, but we look beyond the mere school report. We consider individual abilities that young people display in the context of their lives. We ask for example:

  • Does the student have a part-time job to support his or her family or to pay for his or her driving licence?
  • Does the student spent time in a youth centre to help younger students with their homework?
  • Does the student translate for his or her parents if their German is not good enough to deal with public authorities on their own?
  • Does the student have good or average grades in spite of all that?

We support the students and help them identify their talents. Don’t hesitate to send students to us for an interview. If you are still unsure, please contact us at any time.

What happens if many of our students don’t want to study in Bochum?
The talent scout helps the students reach their individual goals. Therefore, the talent scout assesses, together with the talent, if a degree course at university is the right option at all, and if so, which course and where. The talent scouts are not limited to Bochum.

Our school is, for example, in Herne – who is in charge of us?
In that case, you can get in touch with the talent scouts at Westfälische Hochschule Gelsenkirchen (Westphalian University of Applied Sciences).
