2007 SYLFF Regional Forums – Mission Statement:
Human Rights and Creative Leadership
We are at a critical stage in history. Although more than half a century has passed since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, the world is still fighting to realize human rights. The proliferation of human rights abuses calls for renewed international action and creative leadership that are essential to the achievement of perpetual peace and the well-being of all humankind. It is no coincidence that the UN system as a whole is working towards the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that are in line with the vision and mission of the SYLFF Program.
For the purpose of the 2007 SYLFF regional forums, the term human rights was adopted as a key concept which is used in the broadest possible sense so as to include any questions related to human livelihood and development, in particular within the context of current phenomenon of globalization. Similarly, creative leadership refers to initiatives to resolve continuing problems in original and innovative ways.
During the regional forums, participants were expected to deliver outstanding oral or poster presentations addressing the theme and to actively engage in all regional forum activities.
In 2007, three regional forums took place:
- North/South America Regional Forum at Tufts University, U.S.A., June, 12-14
- Asia/Pacific Regional Forum at Jadavpur University, India, November, 19 – 23
- Africa/Europe Regional Forum at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, June, 24-28
The information on this website is related to the Africa/Europe Regional Forum held at Ruhr University Bochum, between 24th and 28th of June 2007.
