Better Teaching in Engineering
RUB receives approximately half a million euros in funding from the Stiftung Mercator and the Volkswagen Foundation as part of their joint initiative “Bologna – Future of Teaching”. The aim of the project “TeachING-learnING.EU” is the establishment of a common research and service centre that will help researchers from the universities of Bochum, Aachen, and Dortmund improve the education and training of engineers in Germany and in Europe. Some 3,200 RUB students from two faculties (the term "Faculty" is used for RUB’s disciplinary institutional units) are benefiting from the project.
Research topics include university entrance exams, starting university studies, approaches to teaching and learning, exam formats, and the organisation of major events with more than 700 students. New scientific insights into specialist university education within (teaching) projects are subject to testing and further development.
New approaches are intended to lower the drop-out rate in engineering studies. The centre provides additional services such further training for teachers in higher education didactics, support funds for innovative teaching projects, and a doctoral college.
