Cross Border Migrant Organizations in Comparative Perspective
This book analyzes the aims, activities and structures of cross border migrant organizations in four European countries of arrival (Germany, Poland, Spain and the UK) and seven countries of origin (Ecuador, India, Morocco, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, Vietnam). By integrating organizational research and migration studies' traditions it explains different patterns of cross-border resource mobilization and coordination in a multidimensional and multilevel framework. The book provides an overview of key empirical studies on immigrant transnationalism recently carried out in Europe; contributes to a theoretical and empirical understanding of cross border migrant organizations and the relationship between these organizations and their multi-level social environment; integrates organizational research and migration studies and helps identifying different patterns of cross-border resource mobilization and coordination of activities of cross-border migrant organizations. The innovative theoretical framework incorporates multidimensional and multilevel explanations across a broad range of relevant material, ideational, and institutional causes. It involves detailed and disciplined case studies, multi-sited field research, and an extensive comparative chapter.

Ähnlich wie vor etwas mehr als einem Jahrzehnt die Begriffe „global“ und „Globalisierung“ scheinen heute die Termini „transnational“ und „Transnationalisierung“ zu viel gebrauchten Modebegriffen zu werden. Sollen damit alle grenzüberschreitenden sozialen Beziehungen bezeichnet werden und wird Transnationalisierung damit ein neuer Catch-All-Begriff? Oder ist mit Transnationalismus ein bestimmtes und durchaus seriöses Forschungsprogramm gemeint?
Vor dem Hintergrund eigener langjähriger theoretischer und empirischer Studien zum Thema zeigt Ludger Pries, dass sich die Art und Weise zwischenmenschlichen Zusammenlebens, die Vergesellschaftung der Menschen, immer stärker transnationalisiert. Damit ist Transnationalisierung eine wichtige Form der Internationalisierung von Vergesellschaftung, die unser 21. Jahrhundert sehr stark bestimmen wird. During the last 15 years, research on European Works Councils revealed significant findings concerning the structure, dynamics, and ability of EWCs to represent employees' interests. However, up to now there is only little systematic theorizing about EWCs and their special character as 'interest organisations within profit organisations' and the specific relation or 'organisational fit' between both. The aim of this volume is to expand the prevailing research perspectives on EWCs by drawing on theoretical findings from industrial relations research, organization sociology, and international management studies. The volume consists of three parts. The first comprises theoretical contributions resuming and enlarging EWC research; part 2 deals with the institutional and cultural background of EWCs in specific countries and the corresponding research in Poland, France, Spain, the UK, and Germany. In part 3, EWCs are analysed using case study research of EWCs in automobile companies like Skoda, General Motors, and BMW.
