About the Seal
The university seal pictures the brothers Prometheus and Epimetheus. In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the cunning man of action who stole fire from the Gods (the torch in his hand) and was punished for the sacrilege by being chained to a rock in the Caucasus.
In contrast, Epimetheus is the procrastinator who is engrossed in texts (the scroll in his hand). To choose these brothers as a symbol of a modern university is to embody old aspirations for the development of modern science. Prometheus, the forward thinker, stands for the discoveries of the natural and engineering sciences; Epimetheus, the contemplator, for the humanities. Modern science strives to synthesise these two qualities.
The seal represents the fact that the Ruhr-Universität belongs to those universities in which all the disciplines are in dialogue with each other.
