  Superelastic NiTi and NiTi-TiC Composites
Superelastic materials deform, upon application of a stress, by the formation of stress-induced martensite from an austenitic parent phase. Upon unloading, the martensite becomes unstable and transform back to the austenite, with a concomitant complete recovery of the macroscopic strain. Superelastic NiTi can deform to uniaxial strains as high as 8% and is thus used in a variety of applications where large strains at a constant stress are needed, e.g. implants, stents, antennae and glass frames. We have studied the deformation of superelastic NiTi and NiTi-TiC composites using neutron diffraction, allowing the measurements of elastic strains, texture and volume fraction as a function of the externally applied stress. For the NiTi-TiC composites, we have investigated the load transfer occurring between the superelastic matrix and the stiff elastic TiC particles, and studied the effect of these particles upon the texture and volume fraction of stress-induced martensite. Finally, the effect of cyclical loading on the evolution of these parameters (internal strain, texture and martensite fraction) will also be discussed.

Micromechanics of martensitic transformation in thermomechanically loaded SMA polycrystals studied by in-situ neutron diffraction techniques
Transf ormability of shape memory alloys /SMA/ in polycrystalline state depends in some extent on the mechanism by which individual polycrystal grains share the macroscopic load when the martensitic transformation proceeds under external stress. Theoretical and e xperimental investigations of the load sharing mechanism - evolution of the distribution of the applied uniaxial stress among polycrystal grains during thermomechanical load cycles - will be focussed in this talk. Experimentally, the internal strains, stresses and phase fractions in particularly oriented grains of polycrystalline SMAs were studied by in-situ neutron diffraction techniques. Theoretical investigations consist in the simulations of the stress-strain-temperature responses of SMA polycrystals i n thermomechanical loads providing the results in a form comparable with the in-situ neutron diffraction data. Crystallographic model of SMA polycrystal deformation recently developed for this purpose will be introduced. It comes out that key factors affecting load sharing mechanism are elastic anisotropy of the austenite and martensite phases, crystallographic type of the martensitic transformation, grain size, texture and sense of the applied uniaxial load. Results for Cu-based, NiTi-based and Fe-based SMA's transforming in mechanical, thermal and thermomechanical loads will be informed and the load sharing mechanisms in individual alloys will be discussed.

Vibrational Properties of Polymer Matrix Composites with embedded Shape Memory Alloy wires
Embedding pre-strained shape memory alloy (SMA) wires into a polymer matrix allows the development of new materials which can change their vibration frequency in a reversible way when temperature is changed. During heating the embedded pre-strained martensitic wires can not regain their original shape in the austenitic state and act against the stiffness of the host material. As a result, transformation recovery stresses are enerated in the composite, leading to a shift in resonance vibration frequency. A series of different model composites have been fabricated using Ni-Ti-Cu wires, 150 micro m in diameter, embedded in a hard Kevlar fibre reinforced epoxy matrix. It was found, that the stress generated by the activated composite beam and the resulting frequency shift are increasing with the volume fraction of the embedded SMA wires and decreasing with the increasing composite thickness. It was also observed that the frequency depends linearly on stress for all the tested samples regardless whether the stress was induced by heating the sample or by straining it at room temperature. This study is made in the frame of the ADAPT Brite/EuRam project.

Recent advances in the research on R-phase transformation in Ti-Ni-based shape memory alloys
Ti-Ni based alloys are most important practical shape memory alloys, which have been actually used commercially for various applications such as pipe couplings, actuators, bras, antenna for cellular phones, stents and guide wires for medical use etc. The alloys exhibit three types of martensitic/displacive transformations depending upon alloy composition and heat-treatment. Among these, the R-phase transformation is most important from both fundamental and application point of view, since it is associated with extremely small temperature hysteresis (1-2K), which is vitally important for actuator applications, and it exhibits quite interesting physical behavior, which was once ascribed to the charge density wave. In the present talk we will discuss the following in detail; the nature of R-phase transformation, crystal structure of R-phase, shape memory and superelastic characteristics associated with R-phase (both in single and poly crystals), conditions for the apearance of R-phase, premartensitic behavior to R-phase transformation, and applications which utilize R-phase transformation. Overall we will discuss the all aspects of R-phase transformation with emphasis on the recent development in understanding premartensitic behavior.

Martensitic Transitions in substitutional Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn-X alloys (X=Si, Co)
Martensitic transformations in Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn-X alloys have been the subject of experimental and theoretical studies by various authors. However, there are some properties of these structures which have not yet been determined in sufficient detail. The present talk presents part of the results of a systematic study of the structural properties of the metastable phases f ormed martensitically in these alloys. These results, properly combined with dilatometric and differential scanning calorimetric measurements allowed to determine enthalpy changes associated to the hcp-fcc transition. The interaction between the martensit ic transition and the magnetic ordering of the fcc phase as well as the effect of cycling through the transition will be discussed.

Modelling shape memory alloy be-haviour based on the phase trans-formation surface identification under proportional loading and anisothermal conditions
Based on the experimental identification of the phase transformation surface, a modelling of shape memory alloys anisothermal behaviour is proposed. Within the framework of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, two internal variables are chosen: the stress-induced martensite volume fraction and the self-accommodating martensite volume fraction. A special attention is paid to take into account the asymmetry between tension and compression behaviours.
