A group of freaks from St. Petersburg sets off for a travel to the moon in order to establish a underground television and to broadcast “the truth” from outer cosmic space to the whole wide world (www). That this aim is hard to achieve and confronted with lots of problems and confusions is easy to understand and nice to look at in one of the Internet cartoons presented by the famous animation studio Mult.ru.

The cartoons and comics made by the team of St. Petersburg artist Oleg Kuvaev are characterized by a high level of self-reflection of media use and its significance for society. In an entertaining way they put forward questions concerning the relationship of public sphere and the media: what role do TV, Film, Internet and Literature play for the “construction” of the individual and the society, of public and private sphere, of present and past? In our seminar we set for a departure to explore these questions on the basis of theoretical approaches from social sciences (Habermas, Negt/Kluge, Fraser) and media theory (Baudrillard, Manovich) and on the basis of practical case-studies devoted to Russian Reality shows, Soap operas, Internet cartoons or works of Web literature and Net art.

The seminar is a joint study program of lecturers and students in Moscow, Kursk, Bochum and Münster. It is mainly based on the Internet (Distance Learning) but local study groups meet as well in offline-sessions. Scholars from different academic fields join the study program and participate as experts via discussion forum or chat. To the end of the seminar a common workshop (spring 2005) in Moscow is planned.
