Luminous Nanoparticles from the microwave
EMIL: Synthesising materials with ionic liquids
Ionic liquids are salts with quite unique properties. Liquid at room temperature, they are ideally suited as solvents for the generation of nanoparticles. This is because they consist of large ions that encapsulate small particles, thus preventing them from growing further. The liquid salts are, for the most part, non-flammable, non-volatile, easy to handle and fully recyclable. Prof Dr Anja-Verena Mudring’s team deploys such liquids to develop powerful new phosphors for eco-friendly energy-saving lamps as part of the project “EMIL” – exceptional materials via ionic liquids, financed by the European Research Council’s Starting Grant.
