IT researchers set up honeypots to catch Internet attackers
There is hardly an Internet user out there who has not experienced the web’s downsides, be it in form of unwelcome spam or phishing messages, malware infections or similar attacks. More often than not, such attacks happen in the background without being spotted; the attackers want to remain undetected and maintain control over a hijacked computer for as long as possible. Together with his PhD students and international partners, Prof Thorsten Holz (fig. 1) from the Chair for System Security develops special processes to gain a better understanding of the attacks today’s IT systems are subject to. Based on the gathered information, the researchers will be able to develop better protective mechanisms and make future IT systems better equipped to fight malware and other threats.
