What is meant by „Doppelter Abiturjahrgang“?

Universities in NRW will face two generations of secondary school leavers simultaneously in 2013, as a result of an educational reform, reducing the time spent at grammar schools from 9 years to 8. This in turn will increase the amount of expected first-year university students for the Winter Semester 2013 and lead to universities having a high student population in the years to follow.

The Ministerium für Innovation, Wissenschaft und Forschung in NRW (MIWF, Ministry for innovation, science, and research) estimates that in 2013 there will be about 111.000 Studienberechtigte (high-school graduates with a university qualification) ready to enrol in university. Therefore there will be 19.000 additional students in NRW compared to 2012.

Project group RUB.2013: Our Aims and Tasks

Because of the predicted increase of first-year university students, questions regarding the quality of university education arise: How difficult will it be to enrol in the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) in 2013? Will students have to stand in the lecture hall, because it is too full? What about the halls of residence - is there enough space? How about the capacities of the university canteen? Will students have to stand in endless queues?

However, there is no need to worry – the RUB has established programs to maintain the current quality of education. The project group RUB.2013 was implemented to gather ideas and establish concise measures. In close cooperation with the faculties and departments, we have taken on the task of preparing the university for the Doppelter Abiturjahrgang.

We are planning extensive measures, about which we’ll keep you updated on this site. If you have any questions or suggestions in this regard, we are happy to receive your comments. The RUB is looking forward to its future students!
