Good reasons for MA Public Pistory in Bochum

Bochum Ruhr University offers excellent conditions for future public historians.

  • The master programme Public History links subject-specific and historical-didactical research questions, focusing on history mediation in public, non-university and extracurricular spaces. The modules balance theoretical and practical components in order to enhance subject-specific and historical-didactical competencies in various epochs. The Historical Institute Bochum covers a wide range of topics, which can be directly related to possible future professions.

  • The Ruhr University is located in the centre of the Ruhr area, providing a dense network of extracurricular institutions and actors of history mediation (archives, museums, foundations, heritage sites, freelancers and media companies). This offers excellent conditions for the internship semester and the students’ exchange with regional public historians.

  • Both the practical course (“Praktische Übung”) and the internship semester allow contact with the professional practice. Future public historians are provided insight into possible professional fields and they get the chance to analyse the offers of history culture and its reception by target groups. Furthermore, projects allow them to become “active public historians” themselves. The accompanying seminar helps to reflect upon the findings.

  • The Ruhr University is part of the regional network “Universitätsallianz Ruhr (UA Ruhr)”, providing students with an excellent scientific infrastructure.
