Bachelor- & Masterarbeiten an der Physikalischen Chemie II

Bachelor of Science and Master of Science

Works are available in all main areas (see Research Topics). Appointments are most compatible e-mail. If you are interested in a subject area, please contact Prof. Martina Havenith, or to the office of the Chair. In the event of questions about the organization of work and study, you can also contact Dr. Gerhard Schwaab (Academic) shall apply in our group. After selecting the chief topic, the specific topics will be discussed. The bachelor's work can be planned individually depending on the topic, and capacity required credits. Early registration allows us a flexible choice of date (eg, outside University term) according to the possibilities and needs of students.

  B.Sc.-Work: Sample topics

Infrared laser microscopy of living cells and algae
The students are integrated in this work in the ongoing research activities, focusing the work on the methodology of the microscopic and spectroscopic investigation is and the preparation of living cells for microscopy, test procedures, sample quality, morphology change, optimization of the experimental setup, etc. The studies are currently being expanded, and others, the influence of drugs, eg Insulin, questions about the permeability of membranes, blocking of specific channels - aquaporins, etc. Details can be found on the topic of microscopy are also available on our website and in our contribution in 3sat/ZDF TV with media.

New methods of infrared laser microscopy
Build interest in, develop, adjust, measure and
In the context of laser microscopy and laser nanoscopy we also study various microscopy and imaging techniques (tomography, near-field microscopy) in order to answer our questions with new methods of measuring and mapping better. These various test measurements are often necessary to examine their options. Details of topics can be found on our website or in our microscopy contribution 3sat/ZDF TV with media.

Theory and Modeling

Many of the problems require the creation of models to analyze and understand the data. Topics are for example Genetic algorithms, new models for understanding our THz spectra, statistical data analysis (maximum entropy method, etc.), etc. packages include Mathematica (symbolic calculations) or Labview (visualization), and C programming for Molecular Modeling. This can also be combined.

THz spectroscopy
Under the Human Frontiers of Science Program, we investigate the THz frequency range proteins in solution. In this long-wave frequency oscillations and tertiary interactions between solvent molecules and proteins can be expected. This work will be carried out in cooperation with American groups, which mutate the one hand, the studied proteins and calculated in theoretical models.

Infrared spectroscopy
The experiments investigate small molecules in ultracold Nanodroplets. It is for example to asymmetric rotors, symmetric top, and van der Waals complexes in particular biomolecules.

Automated Data Analysis and Instrument Control with LabVIEW
Interest in programming
Electronic data processing and instrument control is essential in the industrial and research laboratory. Automated spectral analysis is a typical example. With knowledge of infrared spectroscopy can be attempted, the allocation of line patterns (pattern recognition) by the software to automatisieren.Ähnliches applies to the control of spectrometers, which benefits the users of the spectrometer by an automatic data acquisition and control of the spectrometer.

Note: The use of the LabVIEW graphical environment is relatively simple. An introduction can be found at Guided Tour - see also the LabVIEW Zone. For students who want to use the software at home, there is a free LabVIEW Interactive Training CD and a 30-day trial. The student version is very cheap asknet available via the portal, or ask your data center. The Ruhr-University has a campus license for LabVIEW.
