The search function in the online database
You can search in the databases using two methods:
Search using logical combinations
The database has up to nine registers in which the data sets are indexed
on the basis of content factors and ordered alphabetically.
Selecting a register
-
To select a register from which you would like to see an extract, click
on the arrow to the right of the entry field,
-
enter a search word or keyword as the starting point for the register extract,
-
select the maximum number of register lines to be displayed,
-
click on the command field [Open register].
As a result, you will receive an extract from the selected register, which
will also inform you how many data sets there are to each keyword in the
register.
Spelling of register entries
-
All words are written in small letters (Physik -> physik)
-
"Umlauts" are transcribed (Wärter -> waerter)
-
Diacritic marks are omitted (ñ ->n)
References to other entries
Some entries provide references to other entries. These can be recognised
by the reference arrow "->". If you click on the left part of the
entry, you will receive the data set from which the entry has been generated.
If you click on the right-hand part, i.e. the reference, you will trigger
a further register production; in other words, you will receive, as the
first entry, another register extract with the keyword referred to. To
go to the relevant title sets, it is necessary in the case of person and
organisation names to go one step higher in the register (because the entry
only leads to the person or organisation entry). This can be done by entering
the name in the search field and selecting a new item in the register.
Meaning of the special symbol "*" behind the entries
Some entries in the registers are marked with the indicator
"*". These are entries on person or organisations in which the given form
(e.g. Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) and the relevant references (e.g. VDI)
are contained.
What else is it possible to do?
-
Command field [Change to]
-
Before the register extract, there are links to the other registers of
the database. If you activate one of them, you will be able to see that
register. The alphabetical starting point is the same as for the original
register, as is also the number of lines displayed.
-
-
Command field [Next page]
-
With this command, you can go to the next page in the register. The next
lines of the register are generated. ('n' stands for the number of lines
originally entered in the search mask.)
-
-
Command field [Show abbreviated entries]
-
If you click on this command, you will be shown the same extract from the
register, but in the form of an abbreviated title. The abbreviated title
display shows one line per register entry with the following information:
-
-
the title (possibly shortened)
-
the author (possibly shortened)
-
the year of publication
-
the signature
Search using logical combinations
Some register keywords of a general nature can often lead to a large number
of data sets. To restrict the search in such cases, you can search the
database by entering several search words which are linked together. The
result is displayed in the form of an abbreviated title list or, where
there is only one match, with the full title.
Entering search words
With the four entry fields for "Search word", you can search for person
names, title keywords, signatures and book titles .
-
Write all the search words in small letters.
-
Do not use umlauts.
-
Do not use diacritics or accents (ñ->n)
-
Enter person names
| surname, first name |
A search will be made for a person with exactly this name. |
| surname, |
A search will be made for all entries with the same surname. (The comma
is necessary to achieve this effect.) |
| surn |
A search will be made for persons whose surname begins with surn
. |
Logical links using and or or
Search is carried out using the link word and . In terms of the
number of matches, this means that all the search words given must occur
in the title set. By selecting or, the search request is broadened:
at least one of the search words must occur in the title set.
The search mode truncated or exact
The search mode using logical links is pre-set to truncated . All
entries are displayed which match the search word or are longer than the
search word.
If only those entries are wanted which correspond exactly to the search
word, it is necessary to change the search mode to exact .
