The Department of Chinese Language and Literature offers a wide range of courses on the languages, literatures and cultures of China. A focus of both teaching and research is on literature, whereby modern Chinese literature and Taiwanese literature have increasingly emerged as fields of research in recent years. The Department also provides most of the language and reading courses in Modern Chinese which are compulsory for students of the BA programme in East Asian Economics and Politics. Attached to the Department are the Richard Wilhelm Translation Centre and the Research Unit for Taiwanese Culture and Literature.

Panel Discussion "Taiwan nach der Wahl" [Taiwan after the Elections]

On 20 January 2016, the Departments of Chinese History and Philosophy, Chinese Language and Literature, and Politics of East Asia joined with the Research Unit for Taiwanese Culture and Literature to host a panel discussion on the results of the recent Taiwanese general elections (poster). The three speakers on the podium were Johannes Buckow from the Mercator Institute for China Studies, Jürgen Kahl, correspondent for Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and Dr. Nora Sausmikat from Stiftung Asienhaus. The discussion was moderated by the dean of the Faculty of East Asian Studies, professor Jörn-Carsten Gottwald.
The organizers would like to thank the Frankfurt Bureau of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany and the Department of Politics of East Asia for their generous support for this event.
