In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Jürgen Straub und Dr. Pradeep Chakkarath, Estrid Sørensen has organised theHans-Kilian Lecture series zur Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaftlichen Psychologie und Integrativen Anthropologie which presents a collection of core figures in the international scene of interdisciplinary cultural psychology.

Warum Emotion?

Geschichte und Funktion von Emotion und Affekt in den Wissenschaften
Tagung an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum vom 30.6.-1.7.2011

Im Rahmen eines konstruktiven, aber auch kritischen Dialogs zwischen psychologiehistorisch orientierter Medienforschung und den Neurokognitionswissenschaften sollen vor dem Hintergrund der Renaissance verschiedener Affekt- und Emotionskonzepte deren Geschichte und Funktion in den Wissenschaften erörtert werden.

Die Tagung findet als Kooperation der AG "Medien und anthropologisches Wissen" mit dem Lehrstuhl für experimentelle Psychologie und Methodenlehre an der Fakultät für Psychologie der Ruhr-Universität Bochum statt.

Prof. Dr. Helmut Müller-Sievers stellt ein Kapitel aus neuem Buch vor

Am 28. Juni 2011 wird Helmut Müller-Sievers im Rahmen des Kolloquiums der Mercator Research Group ein Kapitel aus seinem neuen Buch "The Cylinder Kinematics of the 19th Century" diskutieren. Prof. Müller-Sievers befasst sich in seinen Arbeiten besonders mit den Beziehungen zwischen Literatur, Wissenschaft und Philosophie sowie mit der Geschichte der Philologie. Er ist u.a. Autor von "Epigenesis. Naturphilosophie im Sprachdenken Wilhelm von Humboldts", "Self-Generation. Biology, Literature, Philosophy around 1800" und "Desorientierung. Anatomie und Dichtung bei Georg Büchner". Guest Scientist Professor Michael Hagner visits Mercator Research Group

From 8th - 9th June 2011 Michael Hagner will be staying at the Ruhr-University. He will give a lecture on the topic "Krankheit schreiben" and work together with the members of the Mercator Research Group in a workshop. They will discuss future perspectives of anthropological research.
Michael Hagner is an internationally renowned scientist, well-known for his work on the history of brain research. He works at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

Last professorship filled

On 4 November 2010 the last professorship of the second Mercator Research Group "Spaces of Anthropological Knowledge" was filled. Dr. Christina Brand will now be the head of Unit 1 "History of Life Sciences and Philosophical Anthropology".

Case and Case Histories: Man as Matter of Anthropological Discourses

From 30.9.-2.10.2010 Prof. Dr. Dr. Yvonne Wübben will chair panel 9 "Case and Case Histories: Man as Matter of Anthropological Discourses" at the Annual Meeting of the German Society for the Study of the 18th Century held in Halle (Germany) from 30 September to 3 October 2010. In this panel Prof. Dr. Nicolas Pethes from RUB's Department of German Studies will also present his recent findings on case histories.
In addition to the history, theory and epistemology of the case, the panel will focus on the relationship between the narrative, the media and episteme. It will examine forms of recordings, writing scenes, and the practices of compilation and collection, allowing to situate the case and case histories in the material and literary culture of the Age of Enlightenment. Another panel (1: Speech Matters - Themes and Topics of Rhetorics) will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Carsten Zelle from RUB.

Literary Spaces: Landscape, Memory, Knowledge

From 19.9.-22.9.2010 Prof. Dr. Dr. Yvonne Wuebben will co-chair panel 5 "Literary spaces: Landscape, Memory, Knowledge" at the Germanistentag 2010 in Freiburg, Germany.
Panel presentations attempt to critically review research on the concept of literary spaces in language and literature studies, it will present current projects and outline new ways of researching literary and multimedia-virtual spaces.

Complex temporalities in history and technology

From 4. - 5. June 2010 an international conference was held at the University of Basel about complex time concepts which are equally important for both the media research and the history of technology. Prof. Dr. Anna Tuschling co-organized the conference and also headed the section "deferred action". She gave a welcome speech and delivered a lecture:

Prof. Anna Tuschling co-organised an international workshop entitled "Protocoll and Module as cultural techniques". The workshop (21-22 May 2010) took place at the IKKM - Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie in Weimar, Germany.

Three professors appointed: MRG2 ready to start work

The first three professors of the second Mercator Research Group (MRG2) have been appointed during the first half of 2010 by RUB Rector Prof. Dr. Elmar Weiler.
• Anna Tuschling (Unit 3, Media and Anthropological Knowledge) started work at RUB in April 2010.
• Yvonne Wübben (Unit 2, Literature and Anthropological Knowledge) and
• Estrid Sørensen (Unit 4, Cultural Psychology and Anthropological Knowledge) joined the MRG2 in July 2010.
• "n.n", the fourth professorship, will be filled in autumn 2010.
Since the position of the group's secretary has been competently filled with Mrs. Ute Hoffmann, the team started work, in close consultation with the candidate for professorship 4.
