Die Tagung richtete sich an Studierende, Lehrende und Mitarbeiter der verschiedenen naturwissenschaftlichen sowie geisteswissenschaftlichen Fakultäten an den Universitäten in NRW. Etwa 130 Besucher, sowohl Studierende als auch Lehrende, wohnten der Tagung bei und folgten den Ausführungen Prof. Hellers sowie der Korreferenten. Im Anschluss standen die Referenten in lebhaften und stets kritischen Diskussionen den Fragen der Zuhörer Rede und Antwort.

Big Bang and the Creation of the Universe

The world model of contemporary cosmology presents the Universe as an expanding system starting from a superdense state, commonly called Big Bang. Was it the true beginning of the Universe? Before answering this question we must explore the structure of the standard cosmological model. The exciting story of this exploration will be briefly presented. It begins with investigations within the framework of Einstein's general theory of relativity, and ends up with the present search for the 'ultimate theory'.
Is this research program related to the time honored philosophical (and theological) doctrine of creation? The very concept of creation will be elucidated from both historical and methodological perspective. Can the Universe explain itself? Why there exists something rather than nothing? These questions, even if unanswered, are of great metaphysical weight.
