Starting from 1.1.2010, the interdisciplinary junior research group "Medical ethics at the end of life: norm and empiricism" is being funded for five years by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of the state North Rhine-Westphalia. The group is located at the Institute for Medical Ethics and History of Medicine, Ruhr-University Bochum (Director: Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. Jochen Vollmann). Besides its head (PD Dr. med. Jan Schildmann, M.A.), the NRW Junior Research Group consists of researchers from medicine, philosophy and social sciences.
The interdisciplinary investigations of the junior research group focus on ethical and empirical aspects of end-of-life practices in modern medicine. Besides the realisation of empirical-ethical research at the end of life, emphasis will be put on conceptual studies regarding the relationship of normative and empirical aspects in the interdisciplinary field of medical ethics. The planned work will be carried out in cooperation with German and international researchers.
