Research Interest

My research work primarily focuses on the crystal chemistry of microporous and mesoporous materials (high silica Zeolites, AlPOs, MeAPOs, ordered mesoporous silicates) and of Hydrous Layer Silicates. I am in particular interested in the structural relationship between layered silicates and zeolites.
Future studies will investigate the possibilities to synthesize new zeolite structure types and new Hydrous Layer Silicates, the conversion of layered silicates into microporous framework silicas via topotactic condensation and the structure analysis of layered silicate minerals like magadiite, kenyaite, and crystalline silicic acids.

Methods

My laboratory work includes
- the hydrothermal synthesis of the above mentioned materials,
- a general characterization of the synthesis products (DTA/TG, Diffuse Reflection IR spectroscopy, Powder X-ray diffraction, solid state UV-VIS spectroscopy, microscopy) and
- the structure analysis - mainly based on powder diffraction data (X-ray, synchrotron, neutron)

Teachings

I like, in particular, to teach such courses which integrate theory, exercises and practical work. Topics are: basic chemistry for geoscientists, analytical methods (e.g. thermal analysis, IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction techniques) and Rietveld structure analysis.
