Alfried Krupp Pupils' Lab on political and economic relations between the EU and East Asia
In the context of Prof. Bersick's Jean Monnet Chair the department for International Political Economy of East Asia and the Alfried Krupp Pupils' Lab of Ruhr University Bochum are co-organizing a project on the "political and economic relationship between the EU and East Asia in a globalized world". The project deals with the relevance of East Asian states for economic trends and policy making in the EU as well as with the political and economic consequences of EU developments for East Asia. Additionally, the Pupils' Lab provides links to High School curricula regarding subjects such as Social Sciences/Economics or History. The target group are pupils in grade 10 and higher. The first session of the Pupils' Lab will take place on Wednesday, 10th January 2018 from 9am to 2pm. Further information can be found here or on the Pupils' Lab website.

Conference "Changing Realities of Regional Security", Manila, Philippines

The department for International Political Economy of East Asia, in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), is currently organizing the third conference of its conference series on maritime security in East Asia. The upcoming conference “Changing Realities of Regional Security: Political and Economic Perspectives from Asia and Beyond” will take place on November 23 and 24 in Manila. At the conference, Prof. Bersick gave a presentation on "Political Implications of Maritime Security in Asia and on ASEAN-EU Interregional Relations: Inhibiting and Enabling Factors". The PDF version of the presentation is available here.

Workshop "Voices from East Asia"
From November 15 to 16 there will be a workshop on the topic of "Voices from East Asia: Civil Society Actors in Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Assistance Governance". The event was co-organized by the department for East Asian Politics and the department for International Political Economy of East Asia. International guests will give speeches and participate in panel discussions regarding the role of East Asian civil society actors in governance matters. Civil society institutions as well as non-government organizations will be of special importance in this context. Conference "The New Eurasian Geopolitics: Regional Multilateral Initiatives, Cooperation, and Competition", Singapore
On October 28, the Centre on Asia and Globalisation at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy held a conference on “The New Eurasian Geopolitics: Regional Multilateral Initiatives, Cooperation, and Competition”. The event was funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and took place at National University of Singapore. International guests with areas of expertise such as international relations, (East) Asian Studies or globalization and international cooperation as well as representatives from business and politics discussed various questions regarding the relationship between Europe and Asia. Prof. Bersick gave a presentation on "EU-China relations of the new economico-political Eurasian context" (PDF).

Debating Asia #3: "EU-ASEAN: Strengthening Regional Trade and Investment in the midst of Economic, Political and Strategic Shifts", Berlin
Debating Asia is an event series initiated by the Asia-Pacific Forum Berlin. It focuses on topics of contemporary Asian affairs and facilitates controversial but fruitful exchange between experts from politics, business, culture and science. On October 16, the debate focused on the relationship between EU and ASEAN. The topic "Strengthening Regional Trade and Investment in the midst of Economic, Political and Strategic Shifts" was discusses by Prof. Bersick and various representatives from political, economic or business-related areas of expertise. Among the discussants were for example H.E. Laurence Bay, Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore, Reinhard Bütikofer, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, or Martin Lutz, Co-Head of Unit VA3 for General trade policy issues (EU/WTO), services and intellectual property at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Joint Conference "Emergence of New Global Governance and the Future of Asia-Europe", Florence
On October 12 and 13, Prof. Bersick participated in a conference, which was jointly organized by Korea University (KU), the Korean Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and the School of Transnational Governance at European University Institute (EUI) and which was held in Florence in Italy. In the course of the event, various aspects of global, economic, political and financial cooperation as well as the relationship between EU and Asia were discussed in accordance with the conference title “Emergence of New Global Governance and the Future of Asia-Europe”. Prof. Bersick gave a presentation on "The EU’s Role in Asia: Inhibiting Factors and Enabling Triggers" (PDF). The subsequent round table discussion focused on "The Future of Global Governance and Asia-Europe Relations" and "ASEM as a Venue for Asia-Europe Cooperation", respectively.

Student assistant awarded with AREA Ruhr scholarship
On 1 October 2017 our former colleague and master’s degree graduate of Ruhr University Bochum Julia Breuer will begin a three-year Doctoral Programme on „Transnational Institution Building and Transnational Identities in East Asia“. In June Miss Breuer had successfully applied for the Doctoral Stipend, which is provided by the Alliance for Research on East Asia (AREA) Ruhr and supported by the Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR). The programme aims at looking beyond national borders and building the foundation for research projects on interdisciplinary perspectives by applying transnational as well as comparative approaches to the study of East Asia. We wish her all success!

International Symposium at Tongji University, Shanghai
On September 28 an international symposium on “The Sino-German Relationship After the German Federal Elections” was held. At this event, the experts and scholars did particularly focus on the implications of the German Federal Elections for the bilateral relationship between Germany and the People’s Republic of China. Prof. Bersick gave a presentation on the topic of “Trilateral Relationships between Germany (the EU), USA and China”. He gave another presentation on "Trends in China-EU relations: The EU and the new economico-political Eurasian context."

International Conference at Tongji University, Shanghai
Due to Trump’s presidency, Brexit and rising populist forces within EU-member states, the European Union is currently faced with various challenges. EU-skepticism is rising and it is uncertain, in which way recent elections in the Netherlands, France and Germany may influence the future of the European integration process. At the international conference "The Future of European Integration After the Elections in France and Germany", which took place on September 27 at Tongji-University in Shanghai, international experts participated in interdisciplinary discussions.

Publication: China's Role in Global Transition Processes to Sustainability
In issue 143 (April 2017) of ASIEN: The German Journal on Contemporary Asia, Dr. Ulrike Solmecke published an article on the topic of "China's Role in Global Transition Processes to Sustainability - A Role Theoretical Approach". Dr. Solmecke's contribution looks at China's involvement in global transition processes to sustainability. China's role as an international actor is shaped by economic, political, social and ideology-related expectations. The article contributes to the existing literature by presenting potentials, limits and motivations of nation states, which are either actively promoting a sustainability-related changes or which remain on a conventional path of development.
The Journal is published by the German Association for Asian Studies and is currently in print. The article will soon be available on the DGA Homepage.

Asia-Europe Conference 2017 at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia


From August 3 to 4, this year's Asia-Europe Conference will be held at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) of the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Following the question "Is it time for Europe to play a broader role in Asia?", reknown Asian and European speakers will discuss and analyze current developments in the relationship between Europe and Asia. Shared challenges and opportunities will be examined. Additionally, the event will include panel discussions on comparative regionalism, soft-power, multiculturalism and economic regionalism, especially focusing on the cooperation of ASEAN and EU. Prof. Bersick will deliver a talk on "Economic Regionalism, Economic Nationalism and Other Challenges".

Publication: Germany, China and the G20 summit in Hamburg
In light of the forthcoming G20 summit in Hamburg, Dr. Solmecke and Prof. Bersick published an article on "From Hangzhou to Hamburg: old partners and new thinking". Prof. Bersick presented the article within the framework of a conference regarding "The G20 and Global Economic Governance", which was organized by SIRPA (School of International Relations) and held at Fudan University in Shanghai in May 2017.

In "Europe's World" Professor Bersick and Professor Shiping Tang, Fudan University, Shanghai, published an article on EU-China relations, arguing in favor of a stronger EU-China partnership. You can find the full article here.

EU-China cooperation in an age of uncertainty: 4th Policy and Practice Roundtable and 7th Europe-China Forum, Brussels
At the beginning of this week, Professor Bersick participated in two events regarding the "EU-China cooperation in an age of uncertainty" in Brussels, namely the 4th Policy and Practice roundtable as well as the 7th EU-China Forum. The events were co-organized by the think tank Friends of Europe, the China Institute for Reform and Development (CIRD) and the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA). At the 4th Policy and Practice Roundtable on June 26, the consolidation of connectivity in the framework of the Belt & Road Initiative (BRI, formerly called OBOR) as well as trade and investment flows between the EU and China were discussed. During the 7th EU-China Forum on June 27, the topics "The Belt and Road Initiative: From vision to action" and "Shaping a New World Order: Can China and the EU take the lead?" were discussed in the presence of the EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström, the Chinese Embassador Yang Yanyi as well as representatives from the fields of politics, economics and civil society.

Jean Monnet Workshop on July 4th 2017
Within the framework of Professor Bersick's Jean Monnet Chair, sponsored by the European Union, the Department for International Political Economy of East Asia will organise a workshop on Tuesday, July 4th 2017. The event will consist of a series of presentations concerning the topic of "East Asia and the EU as Partners in Global Ecocnomic Governance". In view of the soon to be published first report on the implementation of "A Global Strategy for the European Union's Foreign and Security Policy" Professor Bersick participated in the two-day seminar "The EU's Global Strategy - From Vision to Action". The Jean Monnet Seminar was organized by the European External Action Service (EEAS) and was taking place in Brussels.

Prof. Bersick gives talk at German School in Shanghai
On Wednesday, May 10th 2017, Prof. Bersick gave a talk on the topic of "Studying Politics? Economics? Involve China?" at the Europa-Campus of the German School in Shanghai. On the occasion and the subsequent discussion with 11 and 12 grade pupils, Prof. Bersick introduced the RUB, the faculty of East Asian Studies, the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia as well as the work of the Jean Monnet Chair „International Political Economy of EU-Asia Relations”. This summer semester, the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia is expecting, for the first time, an intern from the German School in Shanghai.

Workshop on "The G20 and Global Economic Governance" at Fudan Universtiy Shanghai, China
On Saturday, May 13th 2017, Prof. Bersick as well as Prof. Gottwald and other European and Chinese scholars, participated in a workshop on "The G20 and Global Economic Governance", which took place at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Fudan University, Shanghai. In his presentation "From Hangzhou to Hamburg: Old Partners and New Thinking" ((PDF)) Prof. Bersick presented an article, co-authored with Dr. Solmecke and available as a PDF version here. In view of the upcoming G20 Summit in Hamburg in early July, the current state of Global Economic Governance as well as the implication for the cooperation between Germany/the EU and China were discussed. The workshop has been the third G20-related event co-organized within the cooperation framework of RUB and SIRPA.

Roundtable-Discussion concerning current affairs in the EU and the Asia-Europe Institute
On Monday, April 3rd 2017, Prof. Bersick as well as the ambassador of the Kindom of the Netherlands will participate in a discussion at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) of the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With respect to the topic of "The 2017 Elections in the Netherlands: Experiences and Lessons for the Future of the EU" the future development of the European integration process will be discussed. The potential consequences of the 2017 election results in the Netherlands for the forthcoming elections in other EU states will be analyzed. In this context, the Eurozone financial crisis, the refugee challenge as well as the "Brexit" referendum will be central aspects.

International Studies Association (ISA) in Baltimore, Maryland, USA
From February 22nd to 25th 2017, Prof. Bersick took part in the 58th annual convention of the International Studies Association (ISA) in Baltimore. This year's conference dealt with the topic of "Understanding Change in World Politics". Around 6.000 participants from all over the world presented their research findings in over 1.300 panels.
