Workshop "Voices from East Asia"
From November 15 to 16 there will be a workshop on the topic of "Voices from East Asia: Civil Society Actors in Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Assistance Governance". The event was co-organized by the department for East Asian Politics and the department for International Political Economy of East Asia. International guests will give speeches and participate in panel discussions regarding the role of East Asian civil society actors in governance matters. Civil society institutions as well as non-government organizations will be of special importance in this context. Publication: China's Role in Global Transition Processes to Sustainability
In issue 143 (April 2017) of ASIEN: The German Journal on Contemporary Asia, Dr. Ulrike Solmecke published an article on the topic of "China's Role in Global Transition Processes to Sustainability - A Role Theoretical Approach". Dr. Solmecke's contribution looks at China's involvement in global transition processes to sustainability. China's role as an international actor is shaped by economic, political, social and ideology-related expectations. The article contributes to the existing literature by presenting potentials, limits and motivations of nation states, which are either actively promoting a sustainability-related changes or which remain on a conventional path of development.
The Journal is published by the German Association for Asian Studies and is currently in print. The article will soon be available on the DGA Homepage.

Asia-Europe Conference 2017 at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia


From August 3 to 4, this year's Asia-Europe Conference will be held at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) of the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Following the question "Is it time for Europe to play a broader role in Asia?", reknown Asian and European speakers will discuss and analyze current developments in the relationship between Europe and Asia. Shared challenges and opportunities will be examined. Additionally, the event will include panel discussions on comparative regionalism, soft-power, multiculturalism and economic regionalism, especially focusing on the cooperation of ASEAN and EU. Prof. Bersick will deliver a talk on "Economic Regionalism, Economic Nationalism and Other Challenges".

Publication: Germany, China and the G20 summit in Hamburg
In light of the forthcoming G20 summit in Hamburg, Dr. Solmecke and Prof. Bersick published an article on "From Hangzhou to Hamburg: old partners and new thinking". Prof. Bersick presented the article within the framework of a conference regarding "The G20 and Global Economic Governance", which was organized by SIRPA (School of International Relations) and held at Fudan University in Shanghai in May 2017.

In "Europe's World" Professor Bersick and Professor Shiping Tang, Fudan University, Shanghai, published an article on EU-China relations, arguing in favor of a stronger EU-China partnership. You can find the full article here.

EU-China cooperation in an age of uncertainty: 4th Policy and Practice Roundtable and 7th Europe-China Forum, Brussels
At the beginning of this week, Professor Bersick participated in two events regarding the "EU-China cooperation in an age of uncertainty" in Brussels, namely the 4th Policy and Practice roundtable as well as the 7th EU-China Forum. The events were co-organized by the think tank Friends of Europe, the China Institute for Reform and Development (CIRD) and the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA). At the 4th Policy and Practice Roundtable on June 26, the consolidation of connectivity in the framework of the Belt & Road Initiative (BRI, formerly called OBOR) as well as trade and investment flows between the EU and China were discussed. During the 7th EU-China Forum on June 27, the topics "The Belt and Road Initiative: From vision to action" and "Shaping a New World Order: Can China and the EU take the lead?" were discussed in the presence of the EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström, the Chinese Embassador Yang Yanyi as well as representatives from the fields of politics, economics and civil society.

Jean Monnet Workshop on July 4th 2017
Within the framework of Professor Bersick's Jean Monnet Chair, sponsored by the European Union, the Department for International Political Economy of East Asia will organise a workshop on Tuesday, July 4th 2017. The event will consist of a series of presentations concerning the topic of "East Asia and the EU as Partners in Global Ecocnomic Governance". In view of the soon to be published first report on the implementation of "A Global Strategy for the European Union's Foreign and Security Policy" Professor Bersick participated in the two-day seminar "The EU's Global Strategy - From Vision to Action". The Jean Monnet Seminar was organized by the European External Action Service (EEAS) and was taking place in Brussels.

Prof. Bersick gives talk at German School in Shanghai
On Wednesday, May 10th 2017, Prof. Bersick gave a talk on the topic of "Studying Politics? Economics? Involve China?" at the Europa-Campus of the German School in Shanghai. On the occasion and the subsequent discussion with 11 and 12 grade pupils, Prof. Bersick introduced the RUB, the faculty of East Asian Studies, the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia as well as the work of the Jean Monnet Chair „International Political Economy of EU-Asia Relations”. This summer semester, the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia is expecting, for the first time, an intern from the German School in Shanghai.

Workshop on "The G20 and Global Economic Governance" at Fudan Universtiy Shanghai, China
On Saturday, May 13th 2017, Prof. Bersick as well as Prof. Gottwald and other European and Chinese scholars, participated in a workshop on "The G20 and Global Economic Governance", which took place at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Fudan University, Shanghai. In view of the upcoming G20 Summit in Hamburg in early July, the current state of Global Economic Governance as well as the implication for the cooperation between Germany/the EU and China were discussed. The workshop has been the third G20-related event co-organized within the cooperation framework of RUB and SIRPA.

Roundtable-Discussion concerning current affairs in the EU and the Asia-Europe Institute
On Monday, April 3rd 2017, Prof. Bersick as well as the ambassador of the Kindom of the Netherlands will participate in a discussion at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) of the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With respect to the topic of "The 2017 Elections in the Netherlands: Experiences and Lessons for the Future of the EU" the future development of the European integration process will be discussed. The potential consequences of the 2017 election results in the Netherlands for the forthcoming elections in other EU states will be analyzed. In this context, the Eurozone financial crisis, the refugee challenge as well as the "Brexit" referendum will be central aspects.

International Studies Association (ISA) in Baltimore, Maryland, USA
From February 22nd to 25th 2017, Prof. Bersick took part in the 58th annual convention of the International Studies Association (ISA) in Baltimore. This year's conference dealt with the topic of "Understanding Change in World Politics". Around 6.000 participants from all over the world presented their research findings in over 1.300 panels.

Vistiting Researcher WANG Shichen at the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia
WANG Shichen stayed at the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia as a Visiting Researcher from 4 to 16 December 2016. Mr. Wang holds a BA in International Politics from Fudan University, China and a MA in European Studies from University College London, UK. Currently he is a PhD candidate in Political Science at the University of Geneva, Switzerland and Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium, where he is also a research associate at the Centre for East Asian Studies. He delivered two lectures on Chinese and the EU´s foreign policy decision-making.

From 8 to 9 December 2016, professor Bersick took part in the joint workshop on „EU-China Relations: A New Era of Cooperation?“, taking place at Freie University Berlin in cooperation with the Confucius Institute Berlin and the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA). Prof. Bersick held a presentation on the topic of „The EU and the International Political Economy of Eurasian Connectivity“(PPT).

Maritime Challenges in the Asia Pacific: Moving Towards Political, Environmental, and Functional Cooperation”: The Department of International Political Economy of East Asia co-organizes international conference on maritime security in East Asia, in Manila, the Philippines
Over 200 Philippine and foreign representatives from the academia, diplomacy, business, politics and media participated in the conference on the 18th November. In three panels, the current developments in the South China Sea were analyzed and discussed from legal, ecological, geo-political as well as geo-economic perspectives (Link). Prof. Bersick held a presentation on “Practical Cooperation in Disputed Waters” (PPT.). Since 2015, the annual conference series, deals with questions regarding the interplay of economics and security issues in maritime East Asia. The conference series addresses questions of national and regional governance. This year´s conference was hosted in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the AIM Rizalino S. Navarro Policy Center for Competitiveness as well as the Foreign Service Institute of the Philippines.

Dr. Ulrike Solmecke at the Degrowth Conference in Budapest and the International Sustainability Transition Conference in Wuppertal
At the Degrowth Conference from 30.08.-03.09. in Budapest, Dr. Solmecke is going to present her working paper on post growth potentials in East Asia entitled “The luxury of not having to grow”. Later on she is going to showcase the insights of her paper on China´s role between climate protection and economic growth with the title “China's role in global transition processes - a role theoretical approach” at the International Sustainability Transititon Conference taking place from 06.-09.09. in Wuppertal.

RUB-Delegation on the „YICGG“ Conference in Shanghai, China
From 25 to 29 July 2016, Prof. Bersick, Lena Hufnagel and Johanna Rust attended the international YICGG (Youth Innovation Competition on Global Governance) Conference in Shanghai. More than 70 participants from over 28 countries worked out ideas and concepts on the general subject of „Sustainable Development Goals“, focusing on the eradication of poverty. The RUB-Team proudly received the certificate of „The Most Valuable Project“. The project was worked out with other participants at the YICGG. Through the Y20 Summit in Shanghai and its connection to this year´s G20 Summit, to be held in China, the YICGG Conference got a particular significance. Among the speakers were Paulo Nogueira Batista (New Development Bank), Tim de Meyer (International Labour Organization) and Richard Boucher (former Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD).
