GSS Summer School
Our Graduate School Solvation Science hosts an annual Summer School at the Ruhr University Bochum. The school always takes place during Whitsuntide and is an integral part of the GSS students' training during their doctoral studies.
The fourth GSS Summer School takes place from the 6th to the 9th of June, 2017.
Structure of the Summer School
The Summer School extended over 4 days and was divided into two main parts:
Part I: Lecture Series
International speakers, suggested by the students themselves, are invited to give keynote talks on their research in the field of Solvation Science. These are often members of our International Faculty but are by no means restricted to it. The talks are introduced by overview lectures given by RESOLV members. The Summer School 2015 focuses on four main topics: MD simulations, THz spectroscopy, organic catalysis and electrochemistry.
Part II: Advanced Laboratory Modules
The Advanced Laboratory Modules give the students an excellent opportunity to learn new and interesting experimental and theoretical techniques within a specific research topic of their own choice. Groups of 3 to 5 students work together with more experienced scientists in a real or "virtual" lab on a short project using techniques already established in RESOLV. The students obtain a "hands-on" insight into the research activities and acquire advanced experimental and theoretical skills that are new to them, e.g. quantum chemistry in the virtual lab, modern microscopy (e.g. STM, FRel, SECM) or synthesis strategies (e.g. ACDC).
