Mutual interaction of viruses with cells of the immune system

SFB/TR 60: Mutual interaction of viruses with cells of the immune system: from fundamental research to immunotherapy and vaccination (Coordination: Duisburg-Essen; Partner: Bochum, Shanghai, Wuhan)

There is still no cure for HIV or the Hepatitis B and C virus. A better understanding of the transition from acute infection to chronic illness of these three virus diseases is therefore the focus of the international SFB/Transregio 60 "Mutual interaction of viruses with cells of the immune system: from fundamental research to immunotherapy and vaccination" (Speaker: Prof. Dr. Michael Roggendorf, University of Duisburg-Essen).

German and Chinese scientists wish to examine the interaction of persistent viruses and body-own cells in both innate as well as adaptive immune reactions together. In this way, there is to be research into how viruses succeed in escaping from the body's defence mechanisms. They wish to develop foundations for new virus-specific immune therapies and protective vaccinations, reducing the persistence of viruses. Three scientists from Bochum are involved in the collaborative research centre.
