In 2011, the Ruhr-Universität received more than 40 million euros (external funding) from the German Research Foundation (DFG). About 45% of it went into individual projects, and some 55% into coordinated programmes such as collaborative research centres, research groups, and graduate schools.

Since years, the Ruhr-Universität is among those universities with a large number of Collaborative Research Centres funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)..
In 2012, more than 105 million euros revenue from outside funding were acquired, a good part of it for collaborative research. This allows scientists to work together on a subject at the highest international level in the long term and across the disciplines. In future we aim to further increase the number of collaborative research projects.
Funding by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
In 2012, the Ruhr-Universität received 32.2 million euros from the German Research Foundation (external funding). 51 % of these funds went into individual research projects, 49 % into research associations like Collaborative Research Centres, Research Units, Research Training Groups, and projects within the framework of the Excellence Initiative.
