Details

Pre- and Early History is the part of archaeology that deals with the pre-literate epochs of human history. This period, extending in Central Europe from the first appearance of early homo sapiens to the early Middle Ages, is covered in its entire range in the courses offered at the RUB, with the main emphasis on the European periods of metal-working (Bronze and Iron Ages).

The curriculum is supplemented by seminars about hunting archaeology in the Old Stone Age and about scientific dating methods and material analysis, regular excursions and guest lectures by foreign scholars. Key aspects in research at the institute are the global Mountain Archaeology, the archaeology of the Iberian Peninsula, South East Europe and Westphalia, IT-supported analysis methods and – uniquely in Germany – Aerial Survey Archaeology.

The aim of the programme is to enable the students after completing their studies to undertake independent academic projects in the field of the conservation of historical monuments, in museums and at research institutes or universities. This aim requires a scientific training and an introduction to practical work. The scientific training is intended especially to convey the knowledge of sources and methods relevant to the subject matter as well as a survey of the Pre- and Early History of Europe.

Lectures, seminars, practical courses, and excursions serve to achieve this aim. The formal training is necessarily selective and limited to key examples; intensive self-motivated study and preparation is an essential part of the entire study programme.

Placements during the semester break in in-house research projects, with government bodies for the preservation of historical monuments or museums, as well as digs and excursions will introduce students to the practical tasks.
