Details

The classic focal points of Theatre Studies (History of Theatre, Theory of Theatre, Performance Analysis) are currently being defined in the context of the following core areas:

  • Theory and aesthetics of theatre in historical context
  • Mediality and the public
  • Methods of performance and drama analysis
  • Dramaturgy in a present-day and historical perspective
  • Processes of change in the relationship between theatre and audience
  • Reception and performance documentation
  • Theatre Studies from an integral perspective
  • Relationship between theatre and other arts
  • Development of the modern theatre
  • Crossing borders between theatre, media, and other arts in modern theatre
  • Theatre criticism
  • Regional theatre

A long-term connection to modern theatre, especially to the theatre of the Ruhr (regional theatre), is a characteristic feature for Theatre Studies in Bochum. The emphasis has traditionally been placed on theatre and dance. Theatre Studies at the RUB sees itself as a chronicler of the regional theatre, with the ultimate aim being to provide a historical record of its achievements. From the beginning it has placed grat emphasis on the practical orientation inn the dramaturgical training of its students.
