Close contact with theatres and dramatics departments

Theatre studies in Bochum deals primarily with the analysis, theory, history, and criticism of modern theatre. It examines historical subjects such as the stage forms of the Baroque period, the Wagnerian “Gesamtkunstwerk” (total work of art) and Brecht’s concept of the “Lehrstück” (teaching play), as well as current developments in straight and music theatre.

A special feature of theatre studies in Bochum is the close contact to theatres and dramatics departments of the region. The institute publishes the yearbook “Theater über Tage” about theatre in the Ruhr area and cooperates in research with the Université de Paris X, Nanterre. In addition, students of the subject have access to their own studio stage in the “Musisches Zentrum” (Arts Centre) of the RUB.
