Broad cultural horizon
The Department of Slavonic Studies/Lotman Institute undertakes teaching and research in the field of Slavonic languages, literatures, and cultures. One focus is on Russian culture (for example art, music, theatre, or film, but also social institutions and the media).
We currently offer the following degree courses: Slavonic studies (B.A. and M.A., with a choice of Russian and Polish as your main languages), Russian culture in the two-subject model (B.A. and M.A.), and a postgraduate teaching degree (Master of Education, Russian). In addition, language lessons and courses are also given in Bohemian studies, Serbo-Croat studies, and Ukrainian studies.
Throughout the degree course, you acquire a broad cultural horizon that enables you to deal with different traditions of thought, particularly with regard to Eastern and Eastern Central Europe. Also, your communication skills in your chosen Slavonic languages are developed and extended, along with your ability to analyse Slavonic texts and to conduct independent study of all the Slavonic languages. You also acquire generalist skills such as argumentation, writing, presentation, information gathering and independent work organisation.
In terms of content, the degree in Slavonic studies covers three areas of study: linguistics, literature and cultural studies, as well as foreign language training. The areas are covered by different modules. In total, you have to complete nine modules: the introductory module, the three language training modules, and five modules from the fields of linguistics and literary and cultural studies.
