Also as a Russian degree

The Department of Slavonic Studies/Lotman Institute is engaged in teaching and research of the Slavonic languages, literatures, and cultures. Two degree courses are offered: Slavonic studies and Russian culture. In Slavonic studies, the students can specialise in Polish studies or Russian studies. The degree consists of language courses and academic courses on literature and culture as well as linguistics. The degree russian culture focuses on Russian culture and its development.

All courses can be completed as a Bachelor’s degree and as a Master’s degree (one-subject and two-subject model). During the degree course, there are several options for undertaking periods of study in the country of the target language. Alongside the Bochum degree certificate, a Russian degree can also be acquired under certain conditions in the subject Russian culture. In addition, the Department of Slavonic Studies also offers a postgraduate teaching degree (Master of Education, Russian).

Arts, religion, media

Alongside the individual arts such as literature, the visual arts, music, theatre, and film, the degree in Russian culture also includes the subjects religion, philosophy, science and popular culture, and the institutions and media of public culture in Russia. The individual courses examine the historical development of Russian culture and ask how it presents itself, what cultural characteristics it demonstrates, and how it differs from other cultures.

Based on works of Russian literature, art, music, theatre, or film, but also on forms of public communication and rituals of everyday culture, cross-cutting issues are explored such as the relationship between art and power, the individual and society, self-perception, and perception of others. Therefore, in addition to teaching good knowledge of Russian, the degree particularly focuses on the methodological tools that you will need in your future career to independently master similar problems and analyses of Russian cultural phenomena.
