Religious Studies - MA (1)

Overview

The religious studies degree in Bochum is run by CERES, the Center for Religious Studies. Under the umbrella of this institute, religious studies are combined with other cultural and social science disciplines. This offers you a sound degree covering a wide range of religious studies topics.

By studying at one of the largest universities in Germany not only are you able to take advantage of the expertise of a wide range of subjects, but in the two-subject Master you also have attractive opportunities for combining religious studies with another subject. Furthermore, various externally funded projects in the field of research on religion allow you to channel your studies into in-depth research contexts from an early stage: with the International Consortium for Research in the Humanities on “Dynamics in the history of religions between Europe and Asia”, the DFG research group on “Transformation of religion in the modern age” and other research projects, Ruhr University Bochum provides a well developed infrastructure for the research-oriented study of religion.

Study profile for the MA Programme

You can complete the Master in religious studies at Bochum University either as a single subject or dual subject degree. For the two-subject Master, Ruhr University Bochum offers an extensive range of possible combinations.

In both degree variations, your course will be divided more or less equally into modules of material and modules of systematic religious studies.

In the former field, the Master course consolidates your knowledge of the most important epochs and cultures in the history of religions as well as of the cultural and societal significance of religions. The history of religions is dealt with largely focussing on ancient Near Eastern, Graeco-Roman and the so-called world religions (Hindu religions, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam), but new forms of religions of the present are also taken into account.

In the latter field, religion is discussed from a systematic perspective. Through topics of comparative religious history, systematic questions, the exploration of the role of religions in societal transformation processes and introductory and consolidating classes on the sociology and philosophy of religion, the cultural significance of religion is investigated and cultural, hermeneutic skills in religious studies are acquired accordingly.

In the single-subject Master, this solid methodological knowledge in both qualitative as well as quantitative research on religion is acquired in addition to this. An independently conceived and executed field research project, which occupies a significant place in this degree, is designed to allow students to consolidate and apply this methodological knowledge.
