Seven areas of specialisation for qualified lawyers
A particular feature of the degree at the Ruhr-Universität is the seven areas of specialisation that are geared towards the typical occupational fields of qualified lawyers, but also particularly take interdisciplinary and international aspects into account: 1 Family, property, proceedings; 2. Employment and social issues; 3. Business and competition; 4. International and European economy; 5. Economic management, environment, and infrastructure; 6. Taxation and finance; 7. Criminal defence, law of criminal procedure, and criminology.
Added to this is a wide range of basic subjects. For the practical orientation of the degree, key skills are taught, such as trial management, public speaking, dispute settlement, negotiation, mediation, examination techniques, and communication skills. The acquisition of foreign language skills is made possible by legally oriented language courses and foreign language legal courses. The faculty offers graduates further degrees in criminology and police science, as well as business and tax law.
Excellence and repeat courses complete the legal education spectrum.
Supporting courses alongside the degree
Before you are a fully qualified lawyer, which is the qualification for all legal professions such as judge, public prosecutor, lawyer, etc., after the first examination, two years of preparatory practice are to be concluded with a final second state examination. The following help you to achieve this objective: ongoing study groups, exam preparation courses, and “Rubrum”, the all-year university revision group with repetition courses, written examinations, and simulated oral examinations.
The Law Faculty of the Ruhr-Universität is unique in having ist own trial court. In court cases, international moot courts, contract negotiations, or council meetings, our students gather practical experience and impressions for their future career. The internationalism is guaranteed, among other things, by the Centre for International Affairs. Students receive active support in all important matters when undertaking studies abroad. But also incoming students receive a warm welcome and plenty of advice.
