Details
The programme consists of four areas: East Asian politics, political science, language training and courses with a practical orientation.
The area of East Asian politics comprises the following modules: East Asian foreign and security policies, East Asian governments and institutions, and political culture in East Asia. Plenary discussions, presentations in courses, group work, text analyses, case studies and training in negotiation skills are some of the most important forms of teaching and learning.
The area of political sciences is also made up of three modules: political field analysis, regionalization and techniques of imparting group interests (offered by the Department of Political Sciences at the Ruhr-University of Bochum). Classes serve to further enhance the specialist knowledge acquired in political sciences in the B.A. course with regard to content and method. After completion of these modules the students are expected to have gained sophisticated theoretical knowledge in political sciences concerning the structures of the international system, the functions of modern governmental systems and the mainstreams in political thinking.
Alongside the Master programme there is a language training programme in which the skills in Chinese or Japanese acquired during the B.A. phase are developed further. The language classes involve practical exercises in essay writing, reading and conversation.
The Master programme contains a relatively extensive module of practice-orientated lectures to allow the students even during their studies to acquire experience in East-Asian related activities, to build and maintain contacts with relevant institutions and companies, and thereby to increase their career potential. A six-month stay in East Asia for study purposes or two to three East Asia-related internships totaling six months are part of the curriculum. A stay in a Chinese-speaking country or in Japan prior to the programme or during the programme is strongly recommended.
