Overview
The subject of philosophy in Bochum is made up of two institutes that organise the courses in unison. Together, they offer one of the largest and most comprehensive ranges of studies available at any German university. Areas of specialisation: practical philosophy, modern philosophy, Dilthey research and classic German philosophy, didactics of philosophy and cultural philosophy, logic and philosophy of language, as well as the theory and history of science, systematic contemporary philosophy, and the philosophy of antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Two institutes offer great variety
The subject of philosophy in Bochum is made up of two institutes that organise the courses in unison. Together, they offer one of the largest and most comprehensive ranges of studies available at any German university. The diversity of research is reflected in the range of studies of both institutes:
The Institute of Philosophy I specialises in practical philosophy (political philosophy and legal philosophy, applied ethics), modern philosophy, Dilthey research and classic German philosophy, didactics of philosophy and cultural philosophy, logic, philosophy of language, and the theory and history of science.
The Institute of Philosophy II specialises in modern systematic philosophy (philosophy of mind, philosophy of language and cognitive philosophy, philosophy of consciousness, philosophical logic and epistemology) and in the philosophy of antiquity and the Middle Ages.

General requirement: You need at least a high school degree to study this programme. For admission and successful studies a high standard of German language skills is required.
