Overview

Oriental Studies deals with the languages of the Near East and North Africa and the literatures, historical sources, and cultural testimony conveyed through these languages. The focus of Oriental Studies in Bochum centres around the Arabic language and literature, the other main languages of Islam - Persian and Turkish - and the study of Islam: religion, history, and culture of the Islamic regions from their beginnings in the 7th Century to the present, in the Near and Middle East, in Africa, Central Asia, and South Asia.

Literature, historical sources, cultural testimony

Oriental Studies deals with the languages of the Near East and North Africa and the literatures, historical sources, and cultural testimony conveyed through these languages. The focus of Oriental Studies in Bochum centres around the Arabic language and literature, the other main languages of Islam - Persian and Turkish - and the study of Islam:

Religion, history, and culture of the Islamic regions from their beginnings in the 7th Century to the present, in the Near and Middle East, in Africa, Central Asia, and South Asia. The degree course imparts knowledge of the languages and the culture of a large and diverse region. It therefore leads to careers in research, in librarianship, in adult education (in combination with subjects such as language teaching research or education), in the economy (for example in connection with legal, social, or economic science) and the overseas branch of the civil service.

These disciplines constitute integral cultural sciences on a philological basis. They forge links to many specialist disciplines within language, literature, history, social and regional studies and are able to address common tasks with them.

Oriental philology

• Literary studies:
  Arabic literature, authors, and works of Arabic literature; literary studies, authors, and works of a second civilised Islamic language
• History of Arabic-Islamic studies:
  history of science and education; scholars and their works
• Arabic linguistics:
  linguistics of Arabic and its dialects, history of native Arabic linguistics

Islamic studies

• History of religious doctrine and practice in Islam:
  early Islam, the Quran and the teachings of the prophets; development of dogmatics and deontology and the various religious denominations; religious practice, piety and mysticism
• History, culture and social history of Islam:
  history, cultural and social history; contemporary history, culture, and contemporary regional studies

Application

General requirement: You need at least a high school degree to study this programme. For admission and successful studies a high standard of German language skills is required.

There are no restrictions.
