Details
Role of media in social, political, and cultural matters and knowledge
Internet, cinema, television, print, technical illustrations, and mobile phones not only determine how we communicate, but they also determine how we perceive ourselves and others, how our daily and working life is structured, and how we spend our free time. Media science deals with the theory, history and aesthetics of media and media systems. In concrete terms, that means it analyses the role of the media in history and the constitution of the social, political, and cultural issues and knowledge.

Four areas: theory, history, analysis, practice
The contents of the Media Studies degree course are divided into four sections:
The subject area theory reflects the historical, cultural, and institutional aspects of the media. This includes media theories, theories of publicity, communication theories, cultural theories and aesthetics, theories of individual media (such as film theory), and reception theories.
The area of history focuses on the historical development of individual media and their interrelationships in historical situations and in intercultural comparison. This also includes the cultural, social, political, and economic contexts of media phenomena.
The subject field analysis conveys and reflects methods of production, product and reception analysis. These include, among other things, text and discourse analysis, analysis of audio-vision, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and the analysis of media systems.
Practice teaches technical-manual, design, and conceptual skills. These include, among other things, the use of audiovisual material, editorial aspects, and the development of communication strategies. Systematic and continuous training in the practical field is not provided in the Media Studies degree course.
It is therefore strongly recommended that students take up work experience and practical placements at media institutions outside the university.
