Art History - MA (2)

Overview
History of art as a systematic science and historical discipline studies European and European-influenced art from late antiquity to the present. The scope of its central areas of research – in the fields of architecture, plastic arts, painting, graphics, and arts and crafts – has increasingly broadened during the process of modernity and expanded to all areas of visual culture, so that photography, film, design, performance art, new media, etc., have now been integrated into the subject.
- Start: Winter semester and summer semester
- Application: Not restricted.
- Taught in: German
- 2-subject programme: 2. subject required. - Table of combinations
Details
The subject also includes art literature and theory. The structural diversity of works of art and their functions underline the strong interdisciplinary nature of the subject. The international orientation of the subject is demonstrated not only by the close links between European art movements but also by the influence of European art on developments in art outside Europe.
The programme aims to help students acquire basic subject-oriented skills. Students will learn to describe, analyse and interpret works of art within a historical context using a wide range of exemplary materials. Basic requirements for this are the knowledge, reflection, and implementation of the methodology of the history of art. Students will learn to critically appraise art-historical discussions in the light of scholarly and historical developments and thus to monitor the subjects' own methods of argumentation.
This programme requires a second Master Subject.
