Art History - BA (2)

Overview

Art history explores European and European-influenced art from late antiquity to the present. The boundaries of its central research areas have increasingly dissolved in the course of modernity and extended to include all areas of visual culture, so that photography, film, design, the performing arts, new media, etc. are now also integrated in the subject. The area is also supplemented by art literature and theory. As European art is not only regionally linked, but also influences non-European art trends and takes on non-European influences, the subject is internationally oriented.

  • Start: Winter semester and summer semester

Details

Architecture, sculpture, and painting

At the Bochum institute, art history is taught and researched in the entire breadth of the subject as a systematic science and historical discipline. It deals with art of different genres, such as architecture, sculpture, and painting from late antiquity to the present. With its focus on the art of the 20th Century, the institute holds a special position in Germany. This distinctive profile is supported by the art history collections of the Ruhr-Universität with the Campus museum and “Situation Kunst – Haus Weitmar” – which are aimed at strengthening the relationship to the occupational practice of art history.

From late antiquity to present day

Art history explores European and European-influenced art from late antiquity to the present, whereby interests, methods, and objects are subject to historical change. The boundaries of the central research areas have increasingly softened in the course of modernity and expanded to include all areas of visual culture so that photography, film, design, the performing arts, new media, etc. are now also integrated in the subject. The area is also supplemented by art literature and theory. Due to the structural diversity of the artworks and their functions, the subject is interdisciplinary. As European art is not only regionally linked, but also influences non-European art trends and takes on non-European influences, the subject is internationally oriented.

Preparation for professional practice and science

In the Bachelor phase you acquire basic subject-oriented skills. These include in particular knowledge of the most important methods, scientific tools and aids, key subject areas, as well as the ability to adequately describe, analyse and classify works of art within their context.

You subject your own argumentation to the critical assessment of art historical discussions in the light of scientific-historical developments. With regard to your future career, you learn to present facts and interpretations clearly both orally and in writing. The degree thus prepares you for the practical requirements of professional life and the academic requirements of art history work.
