Details
Korean culture - past and present
Korean Studies deals with Korean culture in all its manifestations, past and present. In doing so, the approach is primarily philological, i.e. based on original language sources. A first prerequisite for Korean Studies is therefore knowledge of the languages (modern Korean, written Chinese, older precursors of modern Korean, and especially Middle Korean).
Based on this language knowledge, you study diverse areas, especially classical humanities such as linguistics, history of events and social history, literature, religion and intellectual history.
During the Bachelor phase, you receive a comprehensive basic education with a focus on intensive training in the modern language and the acquisition of fundamental knowledge in the pre-modern forms of speech. A series of basic courses and introductory seminars provides a solid base of knowledge about the cultural history and society of Korea.
The degree in Korean Studies is generally divided into the areas of basic knowledge, language acquisition and readings, and academic methodology.
Language courses are already available in the first year in the optional area. These include the Korean module (grammar and exercises) and Hanja or language activation (conversations in everyday situations). This is extended in the second year by the following modules: Sino-Korean, hanmun, and language activation.
