Overview
The subject classical philology (with course specialisation in the area of Greek or Latin) can be studied as a B.A. degree with a subsequent M.Ed. (teaching certificate for Latin or Greek), or with the final qualification M.A. This opportunity, along with a wealth of related disciplines (theology, philosophy, archaeology, ancient history) can only be found at a few universities nationwide, and is unique in the Ruhr. Students are able to adopt specialist areas (e.g. classical studies, literary studies, neo-Latin, history of the reception). The two-subject degree may be studied with the final qualification “M.Ed.” (teaching certificate for grammar schools and comprehensive schools).

Only at a few universities nationwide
The subject classical philology (with course specialisation in the area of Greek or Latin) can be studied as a B.A. degree with a subsequent M.Ed. (teaching certificate for Latin or Greek), or with the final qualification M.A. Students are able to adopt specialist areas (e.g. classical studies, literary studies, neo-Latin, history of the reception). Likewise, the subject Latin or the subject Greek can be studied as a “third subject”. This opportunity, along with a wealth of related disciplines (theology, philosophy, archaeology, ancient history) can only be found at a few universities nationwide, and is unique in the Ruhr. Despite increased numbers enrolling, students never sink into anonymity, and are given optimum support.
The Bachelor’s degree gives you the specialist knowledge, skills and methods you need to carry out independent scientific work in classical philology, to critically assess scientific findings and to act communicatively at work and in society. Here, the requirements and the changeability of the professional world are constantly taken into account.
Language, style, literature, antiquity
If you study the subject classical philology in the Bachelor phase with the specialist subject Greek or Latin, for acceptance onto the M.A. degree course with the specialist subject Greek or Latin, or an M.Ed. course, you already have to have chosen your specialist subject accordingly in the B.A. degree.
Preparatory course and entrance test
In order to be able to attend certain first semester courses, you have to pass an entrance test in the form of an examination held before lectures start.
During the Bachelor’s degree, you study the following:
- In the field of linguistics:
description and reproduction of classic Greek and Latin, structures of the Greek and Latin languages, historical development, styles. - In the field of literary studies:
knowledge of Greek and Latin literature, knowledge of Greek and Latin texts, interpretation of Greek and Latin texts, knowledge of reception forms, and phases of the classical literatures - In the field of classical studies:
ancient history, philosophy, theology, history of religion, archaeology, and other disciplines
Application
General requirement: You need at least a high school degree to study this programme. For admission and successful studies a high standard of German language skills is required.
