Overview

The degree in Catholic theology includes various disciplines with different approaches - some more historical, others more systematic, practical, or exegetical - and different working methods, making the degree altogether very diverse and varied. The Faculty offers various qualifications (Master of Arts/Magistra Theologiae, ecclesiastical degree, teaching qualification). The two-subject degree can be studied with the final qualification “M.Ed.” (certificate for teaching at grammar schools and comprehensive schools).

Studies with a great deal of variety

The degree in Catholic theology includes various disciplines, some with a more historical orientation, some more systematic, practical, or exegetical. The different working methods add extra variety to the degree. The Faculty offers various qualifications (Master of Arts/Magistra Theologiae, ecclesiastical degree, teaching qualification). The graded Bachelor’s/Master’s degree is aimed, above all at non-ecclesiastical and non-school professions, for example, in adult education, the media or in the private sector.

Among other things, the two-subject Bachelor’s degree prepares you for the Master of Education for teaching at grammar schools and comprehensive schools. You have to study the following modules and areas:

  • basic theological course
  • biblical theology (Old and New Testament)
  • historical theology (ancient and modern church history)
  • biblical theology
  • historical theology
  • systematic theology
  • ethics/social ethics (moral theology, Christian social studies and philosophico-theological border issues)
  • practical theology (liturgical studies, religious education/pastoral theology, and canon law)
  • ethics/social ethics
  • obligatory optional area

Application

General requirement: You need at least a high school degree to study this programme. For admission and successful studies a high standard of German language skills is required.

There are no restrictions.
