Details

This European Inter-University Master's Degree was created in 1993 as result of concerted efforts on the part of the Network on Humanitarian Assistance (NOHA) Universities, working in close collaboration with two Directorates-General of the European Commission: DG for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) and DG for Education and Culture. The initiative was a response to a growing need for higher educational qualifications specifically suited to addressing complex humanitarian emergencies.

The interdisciplinary programme trains qualified graduates of the humanities and natural sciences with the aim of preparing them for humanitarian work in a practice-oriented way.
The programme aims to impart the necessary skills for the different areas of humanitarian work through research and practical exercises. The programme also aims at providing students with key qualifications like the expertise and ability to understand complex problems in order to develop practical solutions concepts and to participate in their realisation.

The programme is intended for academics as well as practitioners with an academic education who would like to acquire interdisciplinary expert knowledge.
The responsibility for the programme lies with the Institute for Peacekeeping and International Law (IFHV). The faculties of Law, Geography, Social Sciences, and Medicine are also involved. This ensures a wide range of academic content.
The programme focuses on different disciplines: Anthropology, Geopolitics, Law, Medicine, and Management. The interdisciplinary curriculum is complemented by a number of compulsory practical courses (freely electable modules).
