Study chronologically, systematically, and spatially

The structure of the subject is divided into three dimensions, which are closely linked in research and teaching practice. In the chronological dimension, the degree subject “history” deals with the areas of ancient history, medieval history, early modern history, history of the 19th century, and history of the 20th century. In the systematic dimension, the theory of history, social, economic, and business history, technological and environmental history, gender history, and the auxiliary science of history link in with these areas. Finally, alongside German history, the spatial dimension of the subject is also shaped by Eastern European history, the history of Southeast Europe, and the history of North America.

The contents of the three academic years

In the first year of the degree course, you are introduced to the study of history. You receive orientating knowledge and reflect on the theoretical foundations of the subject. The content focuses on the study of the epochs of ancient history, medieval history and the modern age.

In the second year you expand your source-critical methodological work, extend your orientating knowledge and learn career-oriented and application-oriented course contents. In so doing, you can consolidate your knowledge of the epochs ancient history, medieval history, and the modern age and also refer to the regional and systematic areas of specialisation represented in the History Department (Eastern European history, history of South Eastern Europe, North American history, economics and business history, technological history, gender history, auxiliary science of history, theory of history).

In the third year, the following aspects are central: the reception of research results, exemplary academic work, the expansion of your orientating knowledge in terms of larger historical contexts and the extension of your methodological skills. This year you also focus on examination-oriented areas.
