Geosciences - BSc (1)

Overview
The geosciences geology, mineralogy, and geophysics acquire and impart scientific knowledge about the earth system – with the aim of describing and understanding this system as a whole, or in its parts, using its resources responsibly, identifying and preventing risks to the habitat earth. The Bachelor’s degree with a sound scientific (mathematics, physics, chemistry) and broad geoscientific basic education creates the interfaces required in practice between the previous sub-fields.
- Start: Winter semester only
- Application: Restricted.
- Taught in: German

Understanding the earth system
The geosciences geology, mineralogy, and geophysics impart scientific knowledge about the earth system – with the aim of describing and understanding this system as a whole, or in its parts, using its resources responsibly, identifying and preventing risks to the habitat earth. The Bachelor’s degree with a sound scientific (mathematics, physics, chemistry) and broad geoscientific basic education creates the interfaces required in practice between the fields.
The Institute for Geology, Mineralogy, and Geophysics combines six geoscience disciplines, which together cover the major aspects of the earth system. These include: geodynamics (magmatism, structural geology, and tectonics), exogenous geology (sedimentary and isotope geology and palaeontology), applied geology (hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry and engineering geology), mineralogy and petrology, mineralogy and crystallography, and geophysics (rock physics and seismics).
At the earliest after two years of study you specialise in a subject area for the Master of Science, that is, after you have gained a comprehensive overview of the entire field of geosciences and are able to assess your own skills and inclinations. In this way, you can also take short-term developments on the employment market or current research activities at the Ruhr Universität into account when making your choice.
