Geography opens up many career fields

At the Geography Institute of the Ruhr-Universität, four areas of study are represented: human geography, physical geography, geomatics, geography teaching methods.

After the one-subject degree (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), you can work in numerous occupational fields in business and management: alongside the traditional activities in urban and regional planning, in environmental protection and nature conservation or development work, branches such as press and public relations, marketing, real estate, tourism, publishing, media, and the generation and management of geographic data are becoming increasingly relevant. These occupations are also open to graduates of the two-subject degree course.

After the two-subject Bachelor’s degree, alongside the one-subject Master’s degree, you also have the option to study for the Master of Education aimed at a career of teaching at grammar and comprehensive schools.

Please note: field work and study trips create additional financial burdens.

The course contents include physical geography, the fundamentals of geosciences, human geography, statistics, basic economics, basic science, development planning, geomatics, GIS tutorials, landscapes and ecosystems of Central Europe, urban areas, regional geography (with large study trip), applied geography, methods of geomatics, and the occupational field of geography (with practical placement).

Apart from the specialist education, the teaching of key skills such as the capacity for teamwork, methodological expertise, the use of modern computer applications, and a career-oriented practical placement are an integral part of the degree.
