Overview

Subject specific requirements:
Bachelor or comparable degree in Political Sciences, Law, Sociology, Economics, or Geo-Sciences, Agriculture, Forestry and Environmental Sciences with a documented political, juristic, sociological or economic focus from an established university.

Proven practical experience pertaining to the management of development programs and projects of more than 4 weeks duration or involvement in research and teaching relating to the management of development programs and projects at a college or university.

In the first semester, the focus of the curriculum is on the introduction to development theories and development policy strategies, and in the second semester on the fundamentals of programme and project management, on method application as well as the specialisation in one of the aforementioned core areas and the preparation for the field work phase. In the third semester, the focus is on the chosen area of specialisation, the writing of the Master’s thesis, and the presentation of the results.

Details

At the beginning of the programme and at the end of the first semester, a summer school will take place in Bochum or Capetown, South Africa, and will involve students of the M.A. programme for Development Management as well as students of the Bochum Program of Development Studies (Capetown). The summer schools cover topics such as methods of empirical social research and the practical aspects of development cooperation.

After the first semester, students participate in an internship in a German – private or public – organisation, which is active in the area of development cooperation. After the second semester, students do field work for their Master’s thesis which is organised in conjunction with a development programme or project in a third world country.
