Chinese Language and Literature - MA (1)

Overview
The subject matter is Chinese texts from the earliest period to the present and the development of an awareness of their contents and contexts in broad linguistic, philological, historical and sociological terms. Students will learn to use the necessary linguistic, bibliographical and technical tools.
The programme is strongly international in its orientation and not only covers the Chinese mainland in its historical and cultural dimensions but also takes China’s influence on its neighbouring regions into account. The concentration on non-European cultural and historical backgrounds is an essential part of the programme. Sinology, being a relatively small specialist field, traditionally depends very strongly on international cooperation between the domestic and foreign centres, and this is reflected in a high proportion of specialised literature in English.
