Overview

The Bachelor’s degree in archaeology combines the subjects of classical archaeology and pre- and early history in a joint degree course. Classical archaeology explores the material culture of Greco-Roman antiquity (circa 1500 BC - 500 AD) as a historico-cultural discipline.
Prehistory and early history deal with the remaining cultural history of mankind from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages in all parts of the ancient world. The related issues are mainly historical. This course profile is unique in Germany.

The Bachelor’s degree in archaeology combines the subjects of classical archaeology and prehistory and early history in a joint degree course. Classical archaeology is a historico-cultural discipline which explores the material culture of Greco-Roman antiquity (circa 1500 BC - 500 AD). Prehistory and early history deal with the remaining cultural history of mankind from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages in all parts of the ancient world. The related issues are mainly historical. This course profile is unique in Germany. After the Bachelor’s degree, in the Master’s phase you can enrol for either prehistory and early history or classical archaeology.

Study trips to monuments and excavations

On study trips you have the opportunity to examine genuine archaeological monuments in museums and outdoors under scientific guidance. Here, the main areas of specialisation are mostly classical archaeology or prehistory and early history. Attendance is a mandatory part of the degree. In the semester break, all students of archaeology are able to gain practical experience at excavation and museum placements in academic institutions at home or abroad. Excavations arranged by the Landesämter für Bodendenkmalpflege (state offices for the preservation and care of field monuments) provide an excellent introduction.

General requirement: You need at least a high school degree to study this programme. For admission and successful studies a high standard of German language skills is required.
