Overview
The English Department is one of the largest disciplines within the Faculty of Philology and offers a wide range of courses on English and American literature and culture, as well as linguistics. In addition, there is a comprehensive range of language practice courses and, if students are interested, business and legal English. In the degree, you can also specialise in one of the areas mentioned. The two-subject degree may be studied with the final qualification “Master of Education” (M.Ed.; teaching certificate for grammar schools and comprehensive schools).

Large discipline in the Department of Philology
The English Department is one of the largest disciplines within the Faculty of Philology and offers a wide range of courses on English and American literature and culture, as well as linguistics. In addition, there is a comprehensive range of language practice courses and, if students are interested, business and legal English. In the degree, you can also specialise in one of the areas mentioned.
In the Bachelor’s phase of the degree, you acquire a sound academic understanding of the language, literature, and culture of Britain, the United States, and/or, to a limited extent, other English speaking countries. At the same time you learn to master contemporary written and spoken English and to understand varieties of English.
Academic work, communication skills
The degree is clearly oriented towards occupational fields and social applications. Taking into account the demands and changes in the working world, the degree gives you the specialist knowledge, skills, and methods you need for academic work, the critical assessment of academic findings and their transfer. You also acquire multi-disciplinary expertise such as communication skills or argumentation and cooperation skills.
For the Bachelor’s degree, English Studies in Bochum offers the following modules:
Linguistics, literary studies, foreign language training, English literature up to 1700, English literature after 1700, American literature, cultural studies GB, cultural studies USA, specialist language, foreign language training

General requirement: You need at least a high school degree to study this programme. For admission and successful studies a high standard of German language skills is required.
