Overview

General requirements:
Wide interest in questions of literary theory and literary studies:

  • a good general and detailed knowledge of individual works and authors of world literature,
  • a good general and detailed knowledge in the area of literary theory as well as
  • well-based competence in the analysis of the form and content of texts,
  • the ability to present on the basis of individual study literary insights and procedures orally and verbally.

Language requirements (for foreign applicants):
Certificate of German language skills in the form of the TestDaF (Test „Deutsch als Fremdsprache“, at least level 4x4) or DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang, at least level 2) or an equivalent language test, like DSD (Deutsches Sprachdiplom, level C1. For all applicants:
Language skills in English (at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework) and a romance language (at least level A2), in addition knowledge of Latin after taking a 2 semester university course, which must be completed with at least satisfactory results (Students switching to the Master program from non-European states, may substitute the foreign language skills in Latin with a classical language from the corresponding cultural area before taking up their Master's studies).

Subject specific requirements:
Good to very good B.A. or comparable degree from a German or recognized foreign university with a duration of at least 6 semesters in a literary or cultural discipline, in which it is common practice to regard literature from a transnational and/or interdisciplinary perspective.

    The M.A. program General and Comparative Literary Studies serves, on the one hand, to consolidate and enhance the skills and qualifications acquired in the B.A. program and, on the other hand, to advance the independent and creative application of literary knowledge, research processes in academic publishing and lecturing, especially in the areas of cultural and literary education.
    The M.A. program introduces the student to the current state of research and teaching and to the necessary subject specific and methodological skills that will enable the student to take part in the research debate.
