Within the field of general and comparative literature, general literature studies and interprets individual works and bodies of work under comprehensive aspects and issues. Comparative literature is mainly dedicated to the comparison of works and authors of several language areas (national literatures).

Two different fields of work

General and comparative literature combines two different, but closely related fields of work. In general literature, individual works and bodies of work are examined and interpreted under comprehensive aspects and issues. Comparative literature is mainly devoted to the comparison of works and authors of several language areas (national literatures).

Subject-related foundations and multi-disciplinary expertise

The Bachelor phase offers a general literary education: you study the history and systematics of literature from an intercultural, intermedia and interdisciplinary perspective. At the same time, the degree is oriented towards occupational fields and social applications. Taking into account the demands and changes in the working world, the degree gives you the specialist knowledge, expertise, skills and methods you need for academic work, for the critical assessment of academic findings and their transfer. You also acquire multi-disciplinary expertise such as communication skills or argumentation and cooperation skills.

Key areas of specialisation

The course contents of the subject are divided into the areas of general literature and comparative literature with the following key areas of specialisation: general literature, basic concepts of poetics, rhetoric and aesthetics, genre theory, models of literary historiography (periodisation), theories of art comparison, literary concepts and methods (for example hermeneutics, deconstruction, structuralism, semiotics, systems theory), etc. Comparative literature, authors and works in the context of world literature, genetic and typological comparisons of works of world literature, material and motif history, thematology, intertextuality research, comparative reception history, translation studies, comparative history of literature, imagology, intermedia comparative literature, history of comparative literature, etc.

Application

General requirement: You need at least a high school degree to study this programme. For admission and successful studies a high standard of German language skills is required.

This programme is restricted, application at the University online portal.
