Visa Extension

The Foreign Citizens' Office (Ausländerbüro) of the municipal authority (Stadt Bochum) is responsible for issuing residence permits and visa extensions.

Opening hours

Students from Non-EU countries require the following documents:

  • Form "Antrag auf Erteilung einer Aufenthaltsgenehmigung" (application for admission of a residence permit)
  • Passport
  • One photo
  • Certificate of Enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) of the Ruhr University Bochum
  • Proof of health insurance cover
  • Proof of financial means to cover the period of stay in Germany
  • Charge fee

Registration as a New Resident

If you intend staying in Bochum as a new resident for more than two months in Bochum you will have to register with the municipal authority (at the "Rathaus") within a week of your arrival.

Foreign students are required to register their residency at the Foreign Citizens' Office (Ausländerbüro) of the municipal authority.

In addition to the main residents’ registry office in the town hall there are residents’ registry offices (Bürgerbüros) in several suburbs of Bochum.

You will have to provide the following documents for your registration:

  • Personal Identity Card (EU citizens) or Passport (Non-EU citizens)
